This information is provided in response to your request. Resources may contain information about doses, uses, formulations and populations different from product labeling. See Prescribing Information above, if applicable.
After injecting the 4 fixed doses of Zepbound® (tirzepatide) provided in the KwikPen®, can the remaining solution be kept for a future dose?
Injecting leftover medicine could result in an incomplete dose even though the KwikPen still has medication left in it. Do not inject the leftover medication, nor transfer it into a syringe. Throw away the KwikPen after receiving 4 weekly doses.
See important safety information, including boxed warning, in the attached prescribing information.
Can Leftover Medication From the Zepbound KwikPen Be Kept For a Future Dose?
The Zepbound KwikPen is a disposable multidose single-patient-use prefilled pen.1
The KwikPen contains 4 fixed doses, one dose taken weekly. Inject 0.6 mL in a single weekly injection, under the skin (subcutaneously).1
After you have completed your fourth injection, you will see some leftover medicine and that is normal (Leftover Medicine). This leftover medicine ensures the KwikPen operates correctly.1
After 4 doses, throw away (discard) the KwikPen, including the unused medication. The KwikPen will prevent you from dialing a full 0.6 mL dose after you have given yourself 4 weekly doses. Attempting to inject any leftover medicine could result in an incomplete dose even though the KwikPen still has medication left in it.1
Throw away the KwikPen 30 days after first use even though the KwikPen has medication left in it.1
Do not inject the leftover medication. Do not transfer Zepbound from your KwikPen into a syringe.1
Figure 1 description: After the fourth injection, it is normal to see some leftover medicine in KwikPen. This leftover medicine ensures the Kwikpen operates correctly. Throw away (discard) the KwikPen even though the KwikPen still has medicine left in it. Attempting to inject any leftover medicine could result in an incomplete dose.
Why Should the Zepbound KwikPen be Discarded 30 Days After First Use?
The in-use period testing ensures that during the period of time once the multi-dose container is opened or punctured by a needle, the medicine stays good and meets certain criteria of quality.3
Testing of the Zepbound KwikPen was sufficient to support an in-use period of 30 days.1
Eli Lilly and Company cannot provide treatment recommendations for the use of tirzepatide KwikPen beyond the 30-days in-use period.
