Can Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) be used in people who have undergone surgery for weight loss?
Tirzepatide has not been studied in people who have undergone any type of bariatric surgery by Eli Lilly and Company.

Weight Loss Surgeries
Eli Lilly and Company cannot provide a recommendation on whether to use tirzepatide in a patient who have any type of bariatric surgery either previous or planned. Lilly cannot provide a recommendation on whether to use tirzepatide instead of or in addition to bariatric surgery. The healthcare practitioner may use the information provided, the patient’s prior medical history and concomitant medications, and other individual factors in developing a treatment plan. The healthcare practitioner should consider potential risks and benefits of treatment options and monitor appropriately.
Lilly has no information on the use of tirzepatide in people who have undergone any type of bariatric surgery because participants were excluded from tirzepatide clinical studies if they had prior or planned bariatric surgery (ie, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, or gastric band (Lap-Band®).1-5
Although some independent, non-Lilly, studies on tirzepatide and bariatric surgery exist, Lilly
- has not sponsored or reviewed these studies,
- is not affiliated with these studies
- cannot confirm their scientific merit, clinical relevance, or generalizability.
