This information is provided in response to your request. Resources may contain information about doses, uses, formulations and populations different from product labeling. See Prescribing Information above, if applicable.
Can Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) be used with weight loss drugs, GLP-1 receptor agonist or DPP-4 inhibitors?
Tirzepatide has not been studied in combination with medicines for weight loss or with similar mechanisms of action.
See important safety information, including boxed warning, in the attached prescribing information.
Can tirzepatide be used with weight loss medications?
Use of approved weight loss drugs with tirzepatide has not been studied. There are ongoing studies to evaluate combination of tirzepatide with investigational medicines. For a full list of studies please refer to www.clinicaltrials.gov.
In tirzepatide clinical trials, participants were excluded if they had used prescription or over-the-counter drugs that promote weight loss within 3 months prior to the beginning of the study.1-5
Can tirzepatide be used with a GLP-1 receptor agonist for any indication?
There is no information on using tirzepatide with a GLP-1 receptor agonist because this combination has not been assessed in clinical studies.
It would be reasonable to hypothesize that using tirzepatide with a concomitant GLP-1 receptor agonist where both drugs stimulate GLP-1 receptors might increase the risk of adverse effects with unknown additional pharmacological benefit.6
Can tirzepatide be used with DPP-4 inhibitors?
The use of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, such as sitagliptin, in combination with tirzepatide, was not evaluated in tirzepatide type 2 diabetes (SURPASS) clinical studies.1-5
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines do not recommend using GLP-1 RAs (or a dual GIP and GLP-1 RA) together with a DPP-4 inhibitor as there is no added glucose-lowering benefit beyond that of the GLP-1 RA alone.7
