Can patients taking Zepbound® (tirzepatide) have grapefruit?
Tirzepatide is not expected to interact with grapefruit because tirzepatide is not broken down by the cytochrome P3A4.
See important safety information, including boxed warning, in the attached prescribing information.
Grapefruit
Eli Lilly and company has no information on whether you can eat grapefruit while taking tirzepatide.
The consumption of grapefruit has not yet been studied in patients receiving tirzepatide.
Grapefruit can block (inhibit) CYP3A4 (cytochrome P3A4), an enzyme that breaks down many drugs.1
Tirzepatide is not expected to interact with grapefruit. Tirzepatide is not broken down by CYP enzyme. It is broken down by proteolytic cleavage of the peptide backbone, beta-oxidation of the C20 fatty diacid moiety, and amide hydrolysis.2
Additionally, in vitro studies have shown low potential for tirzepatide to impact (inhibit or induce) CYP enzymes, and to inhibit drug transporters.2
