How much radiation does Amyvid® (florbetapir F 18) expose a patient to?
The effective dose from a 370-MBq (10 mCi) dose of florbetapir F 18 is 7 mSv. The organs with the highest radiation-absorbed doses were the gallbladder, upper and lower large intestine, small intestine, liver, osteogenic cells, and urinary bladder.
Radiation Dosimetry
Following the intravenous administration of 370 MBq (10 mCi) of florbetapir F 18 to healthy volunteers, the drug was distributed throughout the body with less than
- 5% of the injected 18F radioactivity present in the blood by 20 minutes following administration, and
- 2% present in the blood by 45 minutes after administration.1
The estimated radiation-absorbed doses for an average adult from intravenous injection of florbetapir F 18 are shown in . The organs with the highest radiation-absorbed doses were the

aAssumed radiation weighting factor, wr (formerly defined as quality factor, Q), of 1 for conversion of absorbed dose (gray or rads) to dose equivalent (sieverts or röentgen equivalent in man) for 18F. To obtain radiation‑absorbed dose in rad/mCi from above table, multiply the dose in µGy/MBq by 0.0037 (eg, 14 µGy/MBq × 0.0037 = 0.0518 rad/mCi).
Effective Dose
The effective dose resulting from a 370-MBq (10-mCi) dose of florbetapir F 18 is 7.0 mSv (0.7 rem) in an adult (19×370=7030 µSv=7.030 mSv=0.7030 rem).1,2
The use of a computed tomography (CT) scan to calculate attenuation correction for reconstruction of florbetapir F 18 images, as done in positron emission tomography (PET)/CT imaging, will add radiation exposure. The actual radiation dose is operator- and scanner-dependent. Diagnostic head CT scans result in radiation exposure of approximately 2 mSv. The total radiation exposure from florbetapir F 18 administration and subsequent scan on a PET/CT scanner is estimated to be 9 mSv.1
