How should patients store the Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) KwikPen® during transport and travel?
Store unused KwikPens at 2°C - 8°C, during transport or when travelling. Do not freeze. After the first use, store at room temperature up to 30°C. Protect the medicine from light. Store in carry-on luggage.
What are the recommended storage conditions while travelling?
- must be stored in the refrigerator between 2 ºC – 8 ºC.
- Do not freeze. Discard if frozen.
After first use, the patient may store the used KwikPen1,2
- at room temperature up to 30°C
- away from heat and light
A used KwikPen;
- must NOT be stored with the needle attached, to prevent leaking, blocking the needle and air entering the pen.
- must be stored with the pen cap attached.
The pen must be discarded after 4 weekly doses and must not be used more than 30 days after the first use.
How should tirzepatide be stored when travelling by airplane, car, bus or train?
Patients should keep their KwikPens with them during travel. They should not store their medicine in checked luggage. It is possible that luggage hold areas have wide changes in temperature and may be too hot or too cold for the tirzepatide.2
During air travel,
- place tirzepatide in carry-on luggage.
- temperatures in luggage hold areas may be too hot or too cold for the KwikPen.
- X-rays at airport security screening are not known to affect tirzepatide.
- Change in altitude while travelling does not impact the dose accuracy of the KwikPen.2
What cooler bags are recommended when travelling?
Eli Lilly and Company does not test, market or sell coolers to keep tirzepatide cold for long periods of time, so we cannot recommend any of them.2
If a travel storage cooler is used, ensure tirzepatide does not touch ice or frozen gel packs or freezing temperatures. The medicine should always be protected from light,2
Travelling internationally
Patients travelling internationally need to check with the authorities in the country they plan to visit (embassy). This particularly applies to travel outside European Union.
