Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) KwikPen®: Importance of priming the pen
Priming removes air from the cartridge and ensures that the pen is working correctly.
When does the KwikPen need to be primed?
The pen should be primed before each injection.1
How to prime the pen
The priming is described in steps 4 to 9 in the instructions for use for each KwikPen. Please see the steps below.2
Step 4:2
- Select a new pen needle. Patients should always use a new pen needle for each injection to help prevent infections and blocked needles.
- Pull off the paper tab from the outer needle shield.
Step 5:2
- Push the capped needle straight onto the pen and twist the needle on until it is tight.
Step 6:2
- Pull off the outer needle shield and keep it. This will be reused.
- Pull off the inner needle shield and throw it away.
Step 7:2
- Slowly turn the dose knob until 2 clicks are heard and the extended line is shown in the dose window. This is the prime position.
- It can be corrected by turning the dose knob in either direction until the prime position lines up with the dose indicator.
Do not dial more than two clicks every time you prime the pen. You can adjust the dose dial back if you dial more than 2 clicks, provided you have not pressed the dose knob. Dialling more than 2 clicks when priming will result in wastage and may result in the inability to receive 4 full doses.1
Step 8:2
- Hold the pen with the needle pointing up. Tap the cartridge holder gently to collect air bubbles at the top.
Step 9:2
- Release some medicine into the air by pushing the dose knob in until it stops and then slowly count to 5 while holding the dose knob.
- Check the dose window. You must see the "0".
- Do not inject into the body
The priming was succesfull, if a small amount of medicine comes out of the tip of the pen needle.3 A stream of medicine coming out of the needle is not necessary, for the pen to be successfully primed.1
The KwikPen allows for the patient to attempt up to a total of 8 primes (if needed) and the delivery of 4 fixed doses of 0.6 mL. If the patient primes the KwikPen more than 8 times over the course of its use, it is possible that the patient will be unable to dial out to the Dosing Position “1” for the 4th and final dose.1
What to do if no medicine is seen after performing priming steps
- If no medicine is seen at the tip of the needle, repeat the priming steps 7 to 9.2
- If still no medicine is seen, repeat the priming steps 7 to 9 again.
- If the medicine is still not seen, change the pen needle and repeat the priming steps 7 to 9.
- If still no medicine is seen, after completing the above steps, please contact your local Lilly office.
